Searchlight Festival

Jeff Stein

Searchlight Festival was launched in February 2009. Due to demand and its success, it ran, with an expanded program, for a second year in 2010 –– attracting new audiences and good media attention. There has already been a demand for Searchlight Festival 2011 – both from artists and audiences alike.

Searchlight Festival is a curated festival that runs over one week that showcases a vibrant array of independent performance works. The program includes both full-length and short works; works in development; in conversations; readings (including providing a context for readings for R.E. Ross Trust Award Winners); and workshops. It includes works by solo artists, ensembles, playwrights and musicians. Searchlight Festival brings artists together, expands their audiences and creates opportunities – present and future – for the participating artists. Searchlight is a partnership between Tashmadada and fortyfivedownstairs, and takes place at fortyfivedownstairs.

In two years, Searchlight Festival has already emerged as a ‘breeding ground’ for independent artists and their work. The program of works selected includes those made by those artists who are challenging and pushing the boundaries in their own particular artistic form. These artists offer new perspectives both in form and content.

Comments:

Manbeth's Lachlan Woods:

Searchlight Festival gave our ensemble the chance to test the mettle of our unconventional stage form. I know of no-other Australian performing Arts Festival which fertilizes the imaginations and pushes the limits of it's own artists more.

Musician Elissa Goodrich:

The designated parameters for short works and for new, experiemental performance projects was wonderful/ perfect for us, and within that environment/ expectation we recieved very positive and encouraging feedback , and exposure to people/ audience not familiar with us or our work..... the diverse programming was really exciting.

Writer/performer Robert Reid:

Searchlight Festival at fortyfivedownstairs is a fantastic project and deserves to become an annual event.

Jane Woollard (Director):

Thanks for hosting the Searchlight event. It was a terrific program .... I wanted to say that we really value your support.
